The Solar Installation Process
If you’re considering solar panels, you might not know what to expect once the solar process begins. The solar panel installation process is relatively straightforward and easy to follow. Each installation is unique and specific to your situation, but there are general steps and procedures in place. To give you an idea of what the solar installation process is like, see below the normal procedural outline:
To install solar panels, the roof must be measured and marked. Solar panel installers will follow the measurements and markings when installing the panels. To continue the solar panel system installation, roof mounts will then be installed. Solar panels will be fixed to the roof mount – securing them for future use. It is important that solar panel system installers attach roof mounts correctly and to code to prevent damages or leaks.
The next step is to install rails along the roof mounts, upon which solar panels will be fixed. Rails serve to evenly disperse the stress and load of solar panels along the roof mounts. They also create an elevation between the panels and the mounts. The elevation allows for increased air circulation. Therefore, you will have a longer lifespan for your system—improper air circulation results in heat degradation. Once the rails are put in place by the solar panel system installers, a copper wire is used to join all of the rails and junction boxes. The wire acts as a single point to measure electrical energy.
Continuing the solar panel installation process, microinverters or power optimizers will be attached to the railing. Then, it’s time to install solar panels. The panels are positioned on the rails by the installer and then securely fastened into place. Once the panels are safely installed, the rails will be cut and shaped to the correct size.

The final step in the solar panel installation process is to schedule a utility inspection. The utility company will look over solar, electrical, and grid connectivity. Once satisfied, the company will provide permission to operate (PTO), and the system can be officially put to use.
